The Salty Dog Saloon was the dream of Rhonda Shirey, a dog lover and former bar owner who moved to Port Aransas from Austin over 20 years ago. What started as a “getaway place” quickly became home, and Rhonda poured her energy — and personality — into creating a bar that mirrored the charm, grit, and coastal soul of Port A.
Rhonda wasn’t just selling drinks — she was building a community hub. The Salty Dog became famous not only for its cold beverages and laid-back coastal vibe, but also for its signature salty dog cocktail served “on the gun” with real grapefruit juice and ice-cold carbonation — a refreshing twist that locals and tourists still rave about.
 

Surviving the Storm — Rebirth After Harvey

Like so many Port Aransas businesses, the Salty Dog faced one of its toughest challenges when Hurricane Harvey struck in 2017. The storm surge devastated the original building, forcing its demolition. But true to its resilient spirit, the Salty Dog fought back. Under Rhonda’s leadership, the bar was rebuilt — bigger, stronger, and elevated above flood level — reopening on the anniversary of Harvey in 2019.
The reconstruction wasn’t just a rebuild — it was a tribute. Salvaged materials and memorabilia from the old building were incorporated into the new space, preserving the character that generations of patrons loved.
