5 Famous People Who Visited Port Aransas (And Why They Came)
When people think of Port Aransas, they picture beautiful beaches, world-class fishing, and unforgettable sunsets. But did you know this little island town has welcomed presidents, Hollywood stars, bestselling authors, and even legendary athletes?
Here are five famous visitors who helped put Port Aransas on the map.
1. President Franklin D. Roosevelt Came to Fish for Tarpon
Yes—it really happened.
In May 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt spent more than a week fishing the waters off Port Aransas aboard the presidential yacht USS Potomac. During his famous fishing trip, President Franklin D. Roosevelt used the USS Potomac as his “floating White House,” anchoring it in the mouth of the Lydia Ann Channel near Aransas Pass. As an avid angler, Roosevelt escaped Washington during one of the most politically challenging times of his presidency to pursue the legendary Silver King—tarpon. Local fishing guides Barney Farley, Ted Mathews, and Don Farley helped lead the excursions, and Roosevelt successfully landed several impressive fish. Historic photographs and newsreel footage from the trip still exist today.
Interestingly, despite visiting Port Aransas waters for over a week, Roosevelt never actually stepped onto Mustang Island, choosing instead to remain aboard the Potomac.

2. Hedy Lamarr
Long before she became recognized as an inventor whose work helped lay the foundation for modern Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology, Hedy Lamarr was one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars.
She visited the historic Tarpon Inn, joining generations of anglers and celebrities who came to experience Port Aransas’ famous fishing. Today, visitors can still walk through the inn and see the signed tarpon scales that tell the story of its remarkable guests. The signed tarpon scales are one of the most unique guest books in America.

3. Duncan Hines
Before there were cake mixes, Duncan Hines was America’s most trusted travel and restaurant reviewer.
He spent part of his honeymoon in Port Aransas, helping introduce the Texas coast to travelers seeking authentic fishing adventures and coastal hospitality. His visit reflects how Port Aransas had already become a nationally recognized destination by the mid-1900s.
4. Bob Lilly
NFL Hall of Famer Bob Lilly, known as “Mr. Cowboy” of the Dallas Cowboys, is among the many sports legends connected to the Tarpon Inn and Port Aransas fishing tradition.
For generations, athletes have visited the island to enjoy world-class offshore fishing, proving that Port Aransas has always been a place where people come to unwind.
5. A Tradition That Continues Today
Port Aransas still attracts professional anglers, outdoor television personalities, and fishing enthusiasts from across the country.
Events like the Deep Sea Roundup—the oldest fishing tournament on the Texas coast—and prestigious billfish tournaments continue the tradition that first brought national attention to this small beach town nearly a century ago.
More Than a Vacation Spot
While its celebrity visitors make for great stories, the real reason people continue to fall in love with Port Aransas is the lifestyle.
Whether you’re spending the morning fishing, cruising the beach in a golf cart, watching ships pass through the jetties, or enjoying fresh Gulf seafood at sunset, Port Aransas offers a pace of life that’s difficult to find anywhere else.
Many people who visit for a weekend eventually decide to purchase a second home, investment property, or even make Port Aransas their permanent residence.
