Destination Port A: The Interesting History of Port Aransas

August 21, 2023 by jbaker

Port Aransas, Texas, has a rich history that dates back centuries. Situated on Mustang Island along the Gulf of Mexico, on the Texas Gulf Coast, it has evolved from a small fishing village to a popular beach resort destination. Let’s explore the fascinating history of Port Aransas, from its humble beginnings to its current status as a sought-after vacation spot.

Back To The Beginning

The first inhabitants of the area were Native American tribes, including the Karankawa and the Coahuiltecan people, who lived off the bountiful natural resources found along the coast. The Texas coast began life as submerged sand bars approximately 4,500 years ago, gradually forming the islands and passes that would become vital for navigation and settlement.

A Spanish explorer, Cabeza de Vaca, arrived in the 16th century, followed by French and English traders. The island was first called Wild Horse Island, or called Wild Horse Island, due to the wild horses called mestenos brought by the Spaniards in the 1800s. These wild horses gave the island its original name, which later evolved into Mustang Island, emphasizing the significance of wild horses in the island’s history. Early maps from 1833 identified the area as called Sand Point, and Sand Point served as a key navigation reference before the pass became known as Aransas Pass. The region also included neighboring islands such as Joseph Island and Joseph’s Island, which played important roles in local history and were significant for early explorers, pirates, and settlers. Aransas Bay was another major geographic feature, supporting trade and settlement in the area.

In 1853, the United States government established a customs house on the island to collect tariffs from passing ships. This marked the official founding of Port Aransas, named after Ransom G. Ranes, a Texas rancher who provided land for the customs house. The still natural pass attracted commerce and contributed to regional development. At this time, the primary economic activities were fishing, cattle ranching, and a small amount of agriculture. The region’s rich marine biodiversity included sea turtles, and there was a historical sea turtle export industry, with live sea turtles—some weighing up to 500 pounds—shipped to markets. The abundance of fish caught in the area also supported the local economy.

The first settlement on Mustang Island was El Mar Rancho, established by Robert A. Mercer in 1855. Port Aransas experienced significant growth in the late 19th century due to the expanding shipping industry. In 1888, the Corpus Christi, San Diego and Rio Grande Narrow Gauge Railroad connected the island to mainland Texas, opening up opportunities for trade and tourism. The railroad brought an influx of visitors, and the Port Aransas population steadily increased.

How the History of Port Aransas Shaped Its Evolution as a Fishing Community

The 20th century saw Port Aransas continue to develop as a fishing and shrimping community. Commercial fishing, particularly for red snapper and shrimp, became a vital part of the local economy. The waters around Port Aransas are home to over 600 species of saltwater fish, and a remarkable diversity of saltwater fish inhabit the bays and Gulf, supporting both commercial and recreational fishing. The area has also historically supported sea turtles as part of its rich marine ecosystem, though events such as massive fish kill incidents have occasionally impacted the fishing industry and local marine life.

Fishing in Port Aransas is renowned for sport fishing, especially tarpon fishing, which became a major draw in the early to mid-20th century. The tradition of fishing tournaments, including the famous Deep Sea Roundup, has helped establish Port Aransas as a premier destination for anglers. The abundance of fish caught in these waters has contributed significantly to the Port Aransas economy, which is driven by fishing, tourism, and marine research. Port Aransas draws thousands of visitors annually, attracted by its beaches, fishing opportunities, and outdoor activities.

The establishment of a permanent marine laboratory and the Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas further cemented the town’s reputation as a center for marine research and education on the Texas Gulf Coast. These institutions have played a key role in advancing marine science and supporting the local economy.

The construction of the Port Aransas Jetties in the 1930s enhanced navigation and protected the harbor entrance, making it easier for fishing vessels to access the Gulf of Mexico. Maritime safety has long been a priority, with features such as the life saving station, Aransas Pass Lighthouse, Lydia Ann Channel Lighthouse, and the historic lighthouse tower guiding ships through the pass and ensuring safe passage.

Port Aransas and Mustang Island have a rich military and naval history. During the Civil War, the area was strategically important, with the Union Navy and Union ships enforcing blockades and controlling key waterways. Union ships sailing through the pass, along with efforts to limit Union ship movement, were central to the conflict. The region saw the presence of a Union garrison, as well as Confederate and Union detachments vying for control of the lighthouse and surrounding areas, with Confederate forces at times having pushed Union forces back. Earlier, a small fort was built during the Mexican War to guard Aransas Bay.

Transportation and trade were also shaped by maritime advancements, such as the arrival of the first deep draught steamship in 1859, which improved port development and navigation. Mercer Docks served as a key hub for shipping and fishing, and steamship connections to New Orleans facilitated commerce and travel. Harbor Island and the north bank of the pass were important geographic features, and over time, the pass slowly moved south due to natural processes.

Efforts to mark Aransas Pass and better mark Aransas Pass for navigation and safety have been ongoing, reflecting the area’s enduring importance as a maritime gateway. The combination of fishing, tourism, research, and maritime history continues to define Port Aransas today.

A Casual, Coastal Destination on Mustang Island

By the 1950s, Port Aransas had gained a reputation as a laid-back coastal destination. Its pristine beaches, abundant fishing opportunities, and natural beauty attracted visitors from across Texas and beyond. President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s famous tarpon fishing trip in 1937 helped establish Port Aransas as a premier destination for sport fishing. The tradition of fishing tournaments, such as the Deep Sea Roundup, and the area’s reputation for tarpon fishing further cemented its status as a sport fishing hub. Port Aransas draws thousands of tourists each year, especially during peak seasons. Vacationers began to invest in beachfront property and build vacation homes, contributing to the town’s expansion.

In the late 20th century, Port Aransas underwent further development and became a popular resort town. The construction of the ferry system connecting the island to the mainland in the 1960s improved accessibility, allowing more people to visit. Hotels, motels, and condominiums were built to accommodate the growing number of tourists.

The Spring Break Surge

The emergence of Port Aransas as a spring break destination can be traced back to the mid-20th century. In the 1950s and 1960s, as the concept of spring break gained popularity among college students, they sought out warm and sunny locations to escape the rigors of academic life.

During this period, word-of-mouth played a significant role in attracting spring breakers to Port Aransas. As more students began to visit and enjoy their time in the town, they shared their experiences with friends and classmates, sparking curiosity and interest in this beach destination.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Port Aransas experienced a surge in spring break tourism. The town embraced the influx of young visitors and worked to create an environment conducive to their needs. Local businesses and accommodations adapted to cater to the demands of the spring break crowd, offering affordable lodging options, beachside activities, and vibrant nightlife.

Port Aransas Today

Today, Port Aransas is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant atmosphere. The town boasts a variety of recreational activities such as fishing, boating, birdwatching, and kayaking. The area has earned a reputation for sport fishing, attracting enthusiasts from around the country. The local dining scene offers fresh seafood and delicious coastal cuisine. Port Aransas also hosts various events and festivals throughout the year, attracting visitors and creating a lively beach-town ambiance.

In recent years, Port Aransas has demonstrated resilience in the face of natural disasters. It endured the devastating impact of Hurricane Harvey in 2017, which caused widespread damage. However, the community rallied together and rebuilt, making the town even more resilient and appealing to visitors. The Port Aransas economy is supported by tourism, fishing, and marine research, with the Texas Marine Science Institute playing a significant role in environmental research and education.

Port Aransas has come a long way from its humble origins as a customs house. Its transformation into a popular beach resort destination is a testament to the natural beauty of the area and the enduring spirit of its residents. The Port Aransas population has grown and evolved over the years, and today the town draws thousands of visitors annually, seeking relaxation, adventure, and a memorable beach vacation experience.
